What is InstantSplit?

InstantSplit is a privacy-first web application designed for group expense management. Unlike standard trackers, InstantSplit requires no accounts, passwords, or emails. All calculation logs and trip items remain local to your browser (localStorage). To share with your travel companions, simply send them the generated URL. The entire budget status is encoded directly within the link itself!

How to Use InstantSplit in 3 Steps

Create a Trip: Choose a name, select your currency, and list your friends. No email required!

Add Expenses: Add transactions as you spend. Select who paid and choose if the cost is split equally or among specific group members.

Settle Up: View calculated balances instantly. Switch to the "Settle Up" tab to see the simplified path of transactions showing exactly who pays whom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my friends need an account to view our trip?

No, InstantSplit requires no accounts or login screens. When you share a trip, the entire database state is encoded into a single URL. When your friends click the link, the app automatically decodes the link and populates their browser storage with the trip data.

What happens if my friends and I make changes simultaneously?

Since InstantSplit is privacy-first, changes are saved locally and synced to your server database automatically. If you add new expenses, your companions see them upon refreshing!

Is my data secure and private?

Yes. Your financial information is stored locally in your browser (localStorage) and optional 4-digit PIN protection keeps your server trip data private.

How does the "Simplify Debts" feature work?

Our algorithm reduces unnecessary transactions. For example, if Alice owes Bob $10 and Bob owes Charlie $10, Bob doesn't need to receive or pay anything; the algorithm redirects the flow so Alice pays Charlie $10 directly. This simplifies settling up at the end of a trip.
